The 2004 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award has been awarded to Moroccan author Tahar Ben Jelloun. His novel, The Blinding Absence of Light, was selected from a long list of 125 titles, published in 16 different languages, chosen by 162 libraries in 47 countries. The book, translated from the French by Linda Coverdale, is a fictionalised account of the gruelling experience of Moroccan political prisoners in the 1970s. The award, established by a Dublin City Civic Charter in 1994, is the most lucrative prize for novels published in English. The author has been awarded EU75k, while translator Linda Coverdale receives EU25k.
