Three Names, One Tradition
Three writers who, taken together, epitomise depth of tradition and creative vitality in recent writing in Wales are Emyr Humphreys, Bobi Jones and Robin Llywelyn. Humphreys, a native Welsh speaker, has, during his long career as a novelist, showed a marked preference for English as a literary idiom. Bobi Jones, a Welsh learner, embraced his second language with great passion, and through it made a major contribution to national literature. Robin Llywelyn, a native Welsh speaker and talented linguist, has delved into the twin sources of spoken northern Welsh and medieval Celtic literature to elaborate a highly personal and indeed highly modern idiom of his own. All three writers enjoy an intimate relationship with the Welsh language, all three have approached the task of writing in distinct and singular fashion.
