Atef Abu Saif was born in Jabalya refugee camp in the Gaza Strip in 1973, and attended school in Gaza. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Birzeit, a master’s degree from the University of Bradford, and a PhD in Political and Social Sciences from the European University Institute in Florence. He has published four novels and a collection of short stories in Arabic, in addition to his Civil Society and the State: Theoretical Perspective with Particular Reference to Palestine, which was published in Amman in 2005. He is a regular contributor to several Palestinian and other Arabic language newspapers, journals and literary supplements. His only work to appear in English prior to Transcript 33 was a selection of his fiction translated by William Maynard Hutchins for Words Without Borders. The stories that appear here are from his newest and as yet unpublished collection.
