Tristan Cranfield is a freelance translator of Arabic and French based in London. Originally from West Sussex, he acquired an honours degree in European and Middle Eastern Languages in 2007, having studied at St John’s College, Oxford and at l’Institut Français d’Etudes Arabes de Damas in Syria.

Since then, he has taught English in Turkey, India and the UK, adding a knowledge of Turkish and Hindi/Urdu to his other languages. He has undertaken work for various Arab and British television companies that make documentaries about the Middle East, providing translations of interviews, subtitles and credits, as well as helping with audio and visual edits in-house.

However, his main interests have always been literary; recent projects include translating poetry and short stories for Bloomsbury’s anthology of work from the forthcoming literary festival Beirut39 and for Banipal magazine.
