Indrek Hargla (b. 1970) is the highest regarded science fiction and crime author in Estonia. His earlier works combined elements of horror fiction with the grandiose mind games of alternative history, enabling him to address deep themes, predominantly the correlation between greed for power and hunger for freedom. In his unlikely universes, impregnated with magic, he develops suspenseful stories, whether romantic, like Palveränd uude maailma (Pilgrimage to the New World, 2003), or humorous, like French ja Koulu (French and Koulu, 2005), which plays with the stereotypes of Estonian identity. Although Hargla had garnered fame with his novels outside science fiction circles, his true breakthrough came with the Apothecary Melchior-series, which was launched in 2010 and has now reached its third book. These crime stories feature medieval Tallinn’s equivalent to the famous fictional detectives: Melchior Wakenstede, born, according to Hargla, around 1378, and married to Keterlyn, a girl of Estonian descent. The smart and good-humoured apothecary, well respected by his peers, is already viewed as a potential icon of Tallinn, just as Hargla is viewed as the reviver and saviour of Estonian crime fiction.
