The Czech Poets' Guide to Survival
Every year bookshops in the Czech Republic display about one hundred and fifty original poetry titles. Of course today anyone with the
necessary financial resources can publish a book of poetry, but even so it is clear that despite the advent of the consumer society, Czech poetry is not about to wither away. At the present time there are no less than three large grant projects providing authors with stipendia, which in some cases last several months. Each year about twenty literary prizes are awarded. But how do Czech poets actually make a living?
