Bucharest Carol
by Florenta Albu. Translated by Constantin Roman. From the anthology Aurolac (1996).

Three gypsy magi walk into gaping space
Bearing the rising star
To homes, porches, windows,
Bearing it into gaping space.

Ruined, gaping city
Shrouded in daub and wattle
Sunset chant at the Orient's gates
Sunset chant.

Crumbling ruins of our dreams
Vacant city of daub and wattle&
Through the daub and dust
Of a world forlorn
three little gypsies sing
the magis' carols.

Harlequins! Sing your harlequin carols
Where the gates of a gaping, vacant soul
lie open wide...
