Viking and Gael live side by side in tenth century Dublin, when, according to custom, two families entrust their sons to one another in adoption. But bonds of kinship are overshadowed by remorse and bereavement when, one idyllic day by the river Liffey, tragedy strikes. Clíodhna Cussen's Torfinn is a beautifully written account of coming of age in a turbulent age. Her story takes its inspiration from many sources, including an Orkney folk-tale which recalls the tale of Torfinn, the name given to the man who became earl of Caithness, Orkney, Shetland and Outer Hebrides in 1014.
