In the 1990s, Liam Mac Cóil brought to Irish writing aspects of modernity which had until then been largely absent. Others before Mac Cóil had written in Irish of the individual, but he is perhaps the first to have done so in a context other than that of alienation and ennui. His Dochtúir Áthas (Doctor Joy), essentially a cerebral work, is written in a swift, flowing style which maximises its accesibility. The story documents a series of visits to a pscychiatrist who proceeds to deconstruct the past with Freudian alacrity.
